Lead Dispensing Optician, Rae, has been with Duncan and Todd for nearly 7 years. As part of #EyeWeek she tells us what she loves most about her job.
What does your typical day look like?
There is no “typical” day! In a nut-shell, my job is to deliver excellent, patient-centred care and ensure that our customers leave the practice happy and with the best vision possible. A typical day for me can involve; talking to patients about their needs regarding frames, lenses and coatings following their eye exam (with us or elsewhere), performing lens lessons for new contact lens patients to ensure they’re confident in their contact lens handling and care abilities, adjusting or repairing patient’s frames to ensure the most comfortable fit for patients, checking patients spectacles when they arrive from the lab as well as various administrative tasks throughout the day. On the odd occasion you may even find me attending a Fresher’s Fayre or doing a School talk!
What do you love about your job?
Each patient’s visual needs are different, and therefore require their own solutions. One of the things that makes Dispensing Optician's special is the ability to problem-solve before there’s a problem. I do this for every single one of my patients, to ensure they have the best spectacles for their needs. Throughout the dispense, we’ll talk about the standard; frames, lenses and coatings but once I get an idea of the needs of a patient, we may end up, for example, opting for contact lenses, an uncommonly used bifocal, magnifiers, mirrors, anti-fatigue lenses, different working distances… or we may end up with something completely unique! I love a challenge and I love to put my expertise into practice for my patients.
Being part of such a tight-knit team, we see the same patients year after year and there are faces I have been seeing since I was still training to whom I’ve dispensed that “something unique” and who keep coming back! It’s really rewarding to have such a loyal patient base and enjoy a good rapport. This is by far one of my favourite parts of the job!
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in this field?
I would say if you are a personable person who likes a challenge and a fast-paced environment, this could be the job for you. The qualifications are hard work and require a lot of determination and self-motivation but the rewards are so worth it. You’ve never lived until you’ve seen a baby see their parents clearly for the first time, or a person who was picked on for their thick lenses put on their brand new, thin, light spectacles or a partially sighted patient regaining the ability to see what bus is arriving! There’s so much Dispensing Optician's can do to make patient’s lives better.
